The best type of crystal for your watch glass
(Synthetic) Sapphire Crystal
Sapphire glass may be the most sought after of all watch mirrors, but it is also the most expensive. It is made of real or synthetic sapphire crystal. Of all watch glass types, sapphire glass is the least prone to cracking, chipping or scratching. Diamonds and man-made materials (such as silicon carbide with a higher Mohs hardness rating) can scratch sapphire glass, sapphire crystal glass watches
Plastic or acrylic glass
In the past, these babies used to be the most commonly used variant or watch glass. It is of course the lowest cost to use. Plastic is tough, not fragile and very light watchmaking material.
Mineral glass
You will find mineral glasses on many mid-range watches because they are slightly more expensive than plastic watch glasses, but are more scratch-resistant. If the glass split is deep enough to break the inside of the glass, the glass may even damage the dial or get stuck in the movement.
If you are an active person, or you know that you can be a little clumsy at times, then sapphire crystal is definitely your best choice. It is almost impossible to scratch because it has a Mohs hardness of 9-only one point lower than diamond 10. The disadvantage is that the sapphire crystal is reflective, so if you choose to get it-make sure it is treated with an anti-reflective coating. If you know you need to be careful with your watch and you would rather save some money, choose mineral glass.
