Common milling methods and characteristics

Although the choice of up and down milling is a common question, choosing up and down milling is definitely not a simple task. We all know that, in production and processing, both up and down milling are related to the service life of the tool, the degree of wear and the accuracy of the product.cnc turning service

Then how do we choose the appropriate processing method in various situations?

Down milling
At the beginning of down milling, the chip thickness is the maximum value, the cut out thickness is small, the chip deformation is small, and the cutting force is pressed against the workpiece. In order to obtain a good surface quality, we usually use down milling. Because it has the advantages of small flank wear and smooth machine operation, it is suitable for processing high alloy steel under better cutting conditions.

Instructions for use:
It is not suitable to process workpieces with a hard surface layer (such as the surface layer of a casting), because the cutting edge must pass through the hardened surface layer of the workpiece from the outside, resulting in strong wear. When there is a gap between the lead screw and the nut of the machine tool table, it will cause the machine table to move.

Up milling
The chip thickness at the beginning of up milling is 0, and the chip thickness increases to the maximum when the cutting ends. Polishing is involved in the milling process. The cutting force is away from the workpiece (there is a tendency to lift the workpiece). In view of the side effects of using this method, such as accelerated flank wear to reduce blade durability, surface hardening in machining, high-alloy steel, and unsatisfactory surface quality, this method is rarely used.

Instructions for use: Ÿ The workpiece must be clamped completely, otherwise there is a danger of lifting the workbench.
